I reworked this painting and because of the changes gave it a new title...Canvas... what a fine word. James Cummins paints pictures the motives of which are the great fundaments of art: History, philosophy, literature , science and nature .He composes these into a comprehensive entirety , into a “world.” He works with an intensive engagement, searching for the precise nature of mankinds essence. The results of this search are used in his work like a mirror, in which we can view the reflections of our own ambiguous history and uncertain future. He experiments with diverse materials that he combines in his work as natural physical structures that lead the eye deeper into the idea. The painting can be seen as a relief or as a object. He uses hieroglyphs, symbols, numbers and cultural historical ornaments as talismans for human dignity and mankinds possibility His recent works are multi- layered reliefs, built up with found objects and sculptural forms that he attaches onto canvas..With sand, pigment, glue and with the final product of Arte Povera, namely dust, he conveys in his work the drama of existence and the essence of communication . Cummins who sees language as the mainspring of civilization, uses dust like a patina on a secret archive of hieroglyphs, signs, symbols, numbers and letters He paints using marble and stone dust ,sometimes using canvas itself as an object that he fixes to the picture surface. And that surface is injured ,wounded, cut or in other words made to look “imperfect”. The monologue of the material will not release us from its power of associations., our thoughts revolve around everything canvas is or could be: scroll, bandage, veil, sheet, flag, shroud, cover or screen.....as has already been intimated the curtain is opened wider by the art of Cummins.
