ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Based on stills from recently rediscovered family Super 8 reels, “Cairo Souk-Egypt 1980s" belongs to a wider body of work exploring memory and the cinematic.. Due to the nature of its degraded source, the painting hovers between abstraction and figuration. The use of vivid colours, referencing French post-Impressionnist painting, is also essential to create a dream-like atmosphere and is evocative of the transience of memory.This series is inspired by Super 8 films that my father shot in the 80s on his business travels.

Antonia Jackson is a French born London-based artist and a graduate from Wimbledon College of Art. She is interested in memory and the cinematic and her paintings stem from found family archives ( and more precisely rediscovered Super 8 home movies) that she brings back to life through the medium of painting. Essentially narrative, her work hovers between figuration and abstraction and her bold use of colour is influenced by post-Impressionist French and German painters.She has exhibited extensively in the Uk and has started exhibiting in France. She has recently been selected for the RA Summer Exhibition 2020. Her work is held in private collections in the UK, France,Austria and Greece.
