The Divide The Divide between the conscious world and our subconscious dreams deepens. A chasm filled with gemstones and unpaid bills. Wake from a dream, cook a meal, wake from a dream, pay a bill, wake from a dream, check email, wake from a dream……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. My five year old child, stirs from deep sleep, not awake, but mumbling, trying to form words. Lost in a dream, trying to catch up with it, but it is eluding language, evading reason, running out ahead of words that will try to bring it back into the conscious world, escaping from being forced into a logical system by the waking mind. Society trains us to function in a tactile and objective reality but our brain processes this information subconsciously in our sleep and dreams. “The Divide” is a series of watercolors with mixed media that explore this dichotomy; the seductive subconscious realm in contrast to daily monotonous tasks within society. Subconsciousness represented by vast blue watercolor washes and speckles of stars, the unknown. Linear time appears as a horizon in which consciousness is represented by tick marks, symbolizing the human experience of passing days. Layers of repetitive collage elements, symbolize vestiges of the past and memory. Contrastingly gilded elements, represent what is considered precious by society: gemstones and gold. I contrast these representations of the subconscious and conscious, to explore the chasm in our mind between what we want to do and what the society we have created demands of us. Framed in maple. Kandace Manning’s art explores humankind’s relationship with the natural environment and our perception of that environment. Her art practice is rooted in her interactions with nature and a desire to derive beauty from everyday experiences with the elements. Her work explores the emotional impact of formal elements and their effect on the subjective human experience, and is an organic oscillation between theory and praxis where media follows concept. This has led her into papermaking, painting, digital photography, and mixed media sculpture. Striving to express the truest nature of the media at hand, Kandace allows the media to engage the concept in an organic dialogue with an aim to let the media speak in an effortless language. Her work exists in a dichotomy between the media, (whether it be paper, paint or wood), and its just being, just existing, in a life of its own, while simultaneously expressing the tactile will of the artist’s hand. Kandace Manning studied at The Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, OR and The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City, where she graduated in 2010, with a Bachelor of Fine Art. Her artwork is in multiple private collections and has been shown in multiple galleries including Imogen Gallery (Astoria, OR), Barrister’s Gallery (New Orleans, LA), Museum of People’s Art (Bay City, OR), Shoreline City Hall and Modern Glaze (Shoreline, WA).
