ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work is acrylic on heavy watercolor paper. The white areas of this work was masked to prevent paint from penetrating those areas I wanted to remain white. Then "tar gel" was used to give some texture to an area. The colors were chosen to imitate those of what I think of as tropical colors. I thought first of naming this painting "Miami, 1950" but decided it more looked like an image of a Caribbean island. The bright colors and interesting formations of the segments should bring joy to those viewing the work.

In the great scheme of things I'm fairly new to painting and "art", though I have been an avid photographer for the past 30+ years. I went from photographing my children, landscapes, street photography in New York City and elsewhere, to my favorite genre of macro photography of flowers and the bizarre world of insects.  In 2017 while watching an episode of Bob Ross' "The Joy of Painting" I thought, "He makes this look so easy. I could do paint like that". So for the holidays that year my wife gave me a gift certificate for the local art supply store (we are so fortunate to have Jerry's Artist Outlet nearby in the U.S.) and I loaded up on oil paints, brushes, canvases, etc. I created a number of landscape paintings in oil following Bob Ross' technique displayed on YouTube. After a while I realized I have always admired abstract art so I changed to acrylic paint and my favorite genre, abstracts. For 20 years I was in the jewelry and gem business, designing jewelry for customers as well as grading and valuating gems as a GIA Graduate Gemologist. For the past 25 years I've been a teacher of elementary students, students of middle level mathematics, and most recently I teach teachers to use technology in the classroom. Being an "empty nester" and sneaking up on retirement I have been spending more time painting and creating art. Recently I have dabbled in offering some of my landscape and abstract paintings in local sales and have received numerous compliments on my work and sold many of my paintings to a number of people including some for display in restaurants and bars. This has led me to offering my work here on Saatchi. I hope you enjoy viewing my work and consider purchasing.
