Wawel is a castle complex on the hill of the same name in the city of Krakow, Poland. Located on the left bank of the Vistula River, it is extremely important for the historical consciousness and self-identification of the Polish people. History proves that there was a Vistula settlement on Wawel Hill as early as the 11th century. Initially, the Wawel buildings had a defensive character. Wawel became royal sometime between 1038 and 1039, during the reign of Casimir the Restorer from the Piast family. Later, King Casimir III promoted Gothic reconstruction in the 14th century. A Gothic castle was built on the ruins of the city that existed here in the X-XIII centuries, which was then rebuilt in 1507-1536 into a large Renaissance palace with a courtyard surrounded by a colonnade of an arcade gallery. Wawel has a very long and interesting history. Therefore, the castle is a mixture of many architectural styles. Artists from Italy worked here - gunsmiths from Milan, architects, sculptors, and painters. And there is also a gigantic art collection, and the castle itself is a masterpiece and the main decoration of Krakow!
