Chance of Showers Painting

This painting is a creation of imagination, but it directly references a work from the Italian Renaissance, entitled "La Tempesta", by the Venetian artist Giorgione. Giorgione's painting has a woman nursing a baby, a thunderstorm in the background, some buildings, lush plant life, and a male bystander, who may or may not be acquainted with the female. Although scholars disagree on the meaning of the work, there is some agreement that it may be the first truly secular painting in Western Europe. I hope my "Chance of Showers" poses the same kinds of questions and gives the same kinds of answers that may have motivated Giorgione. The nursing mother in my painting is brought more to the foreground so there may be a bit of "Madonna and Child" mixed in, but I have no intention of departing from a secular approach. It indicates the human condition with reference only to things directly and immediately perceived. The painting is oil on acrylic primed cotton canvas, stretched on 1 1/2 inch bars and fastened on the back of the bars with steel tacks.
