About The Artwork

Nude male figure series. Nudes as an artistic expression is an ancient topic that remains popular today. More often than not, people will associate nudes with a female body which is more exploited in these post-modern times keeping the male figure in the shadow. With this series, I wish to illuminate the male body. My way of expressing myself is both classical and modern - I do not wish to lose the link with the traditional way of artistic expression while also presenting the male body in the modern context. The dilemmas that arise from the modern world are presented through the figures in convulsive poses, searching, fighting, or expressing insecurity and a need for protection. A nude male figure is an exalted act that I present without shame wishing to emphasize the beauty of a man fighting for his place in the modern world.

Jelena Vragović was born in Vršac, Serbia in 1973. She is a member of ULUS and ULUPUDS. She had independent exhibitions in Belgrade, Vršac, Pančevo, Novi Sad, Kučevo, Dimitrovgrad, Arilje, and Niš. Furthermore, she has participated in numerous collective exhibitions and art colonies in Serbia and abroad. Her art consists of landscapes and figure paintings and has received a plethora of rewards throughout the years. Old Greeks treated the female nude paintings as passive beauty while the male nude paintings were presented in action and seen as the embodiment of gods themselves. Erotic female bodies are seen as objects, while erotic male bodies are treated as a sacrifice of epic existence. Erotic male nude paintings seem to have remained the last taboo – they are rarely painted and thus I wish to bravely offer my perception of the topic. The paintings are an act of rebellion against the world that is asleep, resembling an epic scream and action that we gave up on.
