Children of the Sun Painting by Kat Crosby

Bold and playful abstract done with acrylic and mixed media on a wrapped canvas.

I name my pieces by what occurred while painting the piece: what moved me, what struggles had to be overcome, my mood, my train of thought, what the piece reminded me of, sometimes a song that was on and the beat moved me or the lyrics influenced me in some way. I never intentionally start out a painting saying “I’m going to do this, or I’m going to do that”. All of my pieces morph into something that is totally surprising and unexpected.

I draw my inspiration from exploration. I’m constantly experimenting, playing and trying new techniques. It’s the ‘what if’ that excites me. Everything goes into my creative process. My mind is restless and I'm always thinking of new things to paint and different techniques I want to try. Sometimes this works, but a lot of times I fall flat on my face, but I use this as a learning experience and move forward. My art is very informal with a playful but edgy vibe. When I'm inspired to start a painting, the piece usually takes on a direction of its own. Sometimes conflicts have to be overcome, but at other times, when I'm in the moment and not really thinking about where the painting is going, that’s when it's magical. I had one viewer of my work comment that "I used color, texture and shape without fear." I try to approach each piece without fear of doing something wrong and let the piece shape itself and bring me along for the ride. Being an abstract expressionist, I don’t like to tell people what I was thinking when doing a painting because most of the time I don’t know myself. I just want to experiment and explore...discover the possibilities. I really would like for them to take away from the work what speaks to them. I don't want to put any preconceived ideas into the viewers head. That is why I like abstract pieces so much, the viewer can form their own conclusions and let their imagination run wild.
