ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In this work I was inspired by a work by René Michel Slodtz conserved in the Louvre. The essential characteristic of classical Greek art and its sculptures were mostly of a heroic realism. They always attempted to reveal the human body, in movement or repose. The painting is tondo, a classic format of Italian painting. I wanted to keep the classic shapes while exploring a completely different palette: vivid, contemporary, highly contrasted. The painting is inspired by an episode from the Iliad. During the Trojan War, Agamemnon took Chryses' daughter Chryseis from Moesia as a war prize. When Chryses attempted to ransom her, Agamemnon refused to return her. Chryses prayed to Apollo, and he, in order to defend the honor of his priest, sent a plague sweeping through the Greek armies. Agamemnon was forced to give Chryseis back in order to end it.

In my work I play with the narrative possibilities made available by the practice of painting. By the means of representation I sketch stories that does not fully make sense, that don’t necessarily have a logical chain or a plausibility. In my paintings I try to put side by side, overlap and recombine scenes that are part of people’s everyday lives but that come from different times and different places. The characters and the occurrence that I depict come from photographic archives or from journals and magazines. Imagines at the same time anonymous and intimates.The result of this combination is a sort of visual riddle that anyone can resolve and guess, completing the story.
