Chun Li #4 (AIbstract) Painting

This piece is part of a series of paintings where the initial ideas are generated by algorithms and then painted in an abstract expressive style. Inspiration for this piece came from artificial intelligence—algorithms that can generate characters based masculine and feminine attributes. By pushing these attributes to the point of abstraction, I sought to find the implicit biases in the data set and technology. In this case, the chaotic mixture of highly "feminine" and highly "inhuman" attributes pushed the AI toward a stereotypically feminine palette of pinks and purples, with forms reminiscent of a dancer. Painting the piece was a process of hiding and revealing core forms, in the spirit of Franz Kline, and letting the natural wood absorb different viscosities of paint layers.
