About The Artwork

As far back as I can remember, I could lie on the grass for hours and look for fun shapes in the clouds above. To be so care free.... Do kids do this anymore? There is forgotten peace, a stash of secret dreams, a quiet understanding that I hoped to capture and share in this painting. I hope this Abstract blend of subtle and hard lines and blended soft spaces gives the viewer reason to pause. Perhaps to pause and remember the space between the imagined and the real.Maybe akin to finding fun shapes in clouds.

Kathryn Fortson has exhibited in group and solo shows throughout the Southeastern U.S. Her paintings and prints are held in private, corporate, and public collections world wide. "For me, abstract painting begins by connecting to a state of being or maybe connecting to an emotion. Sometimes being an object or element in nature. To be a shell … or to be a blade of grass in the wind. And, if not a tangible thing, I often connect to states of being. Can emotion form motion? Would it form line, depth shadows, movement ….how might laughter play with colors and light? When I am painting, I don't really think about what brush to pick up or color to mix. It is as though my connected state and my painting skills have their own dance. It is a little bit meditative, a little bit of disassociation and a lot of surrendering. I hope my work can evoke curiosity and perhaps encourage a different outlook or perspective. Maybe nudge the viewer to bypass one's typical interpretations and open to the intangible energy an art piece may offer. Kathryn Fortson's studio is in Alpharetta, Georgia USA. She accepts commissions.
