About The Artwork

The artists latest body of work takes on a new focus into mark making techniques. In an effort to make sense of it all during the last 2 years, with more time confined to the studio, the artist spent time exploring existing techniques, gaining inspiration from every day objects around her during the lockdowns. Eventually bringing all the focus onto the minute detail of the Banksia and protea flowers she had been using in her work. With a huge collection of dried flowers available in her studio, each small element of the flowers began to feature according to their shape and form. Each mark and brushstroke evolved from this focus. An emotive response to being confined. This and the continued passion for colorful crafts, warm knits, crochet and embroidery brought a focus onto individual stitches, the textures and colours of the textiles plus the materials used gave further inspiration to expand on this body of work. Thus the works in this series are derived from a process of experiments. They are indeed the antithesis of the impressionist style still life works featuring native flowers. Each mark is painstakingly added to a backdrop of layered paint, this backdrop is applied in a chaotic way, in this work a landscape evolved with beautiful cloud formations. The final mark making layer takes the work in a completely different direction to it's original format. The brush strokes are added creating texture and movement over the canvas that is as mesmerising and therapeutic as the process is itself. The abstract composition takes on a landscape of it's own. This work references an cloud burst. The quantity of marks on each canvas have a symbolism, as does the arrangement and patterns created. The outcome is an attempt to make sense of it all and create some semblance of order. This work is ready to hang. It is perfectly framed in a natural oak 2cm wide

Having lived in the UK, South Africa, and now in Australia, preserving elements of her life and experiences is paramount in her work. Compositionally diverse artist she often seeks to capture a symbolism in her work, drawing on her experiences living in these very different countries. Calling on the connection she has with South Africa and Australia, Karen Goddard’s abstracts and floral artworks are deeply influenced by the botanicals and environmental facets familiar to both. Her still life depictions encapsulate the innate shapes and exuberance of her organic subjects, while her mark making abstractions embody their unique and specific colourations. Previously living through times of national turmoil and transformation, her works persistently focus on the beauty of her natural surroundings, and deliver an emotive and meditative quality that arouses captivation and peace. Favouring an impressionistic creative approach, Karen alternates between oils and acrylics in order to produce diverse compositional elements, imagery and texturizations. She typically begins by depositing a ground colour onto the canvas, which habitually determines the ethos of the work. Layering the complimentary colours in stages, which are individually mixed through a meticulously process, each of the darker shades are typically set down first, while lighter colours are introduced later. A pattern of short and repetitive brushstrokes are utilised in the creation of her abstracts, which produces an overlay over the existing colour work, and instigates the qualities of movement and flow.
