Coatlicue is a great mother goddess who predates the Aztec Empire. She sacrificed her heart to help create the fifth and present sun, and reborn in the form of her snake skirt. During Aztec spring festivals she was honored with the first fruits and flowers. Each autumn, it has been reported, a woman impersonating Coatlicue was sacrificed in remembrance of her.
