Antonio Ismael Loperena Garro, known as Ismael Loperena, was born on July 11, 1954, in Arguedas, Navarra, Spain. Son of renowned sculptor Antonio Loperena, he grew up immersed in art but fully embraced his calling in 1979, studying Fine Arts at the University of Bilbao. His artistic journey has been shaped by extensive travels, influencing his style, which blends figurative art with avant-garde elements. He has left his mark in France, Australia, Venezuela, Portugal, Belgium, Alicante, and New York, each place enriching his creative vision. A pivotal period came in Venezuela (1983–1985), where he refined his painting skills despite economic challenges. His connection with high society, particularly Helena Mosquera, opened doors, leading to commissions like a three-meter mural for the Sheraton Hotel in Caracas. Between 1985 and 1988, he lived a bohemian life in Alicante until a near-fatal bout of peritonitis in 1987 forced him to reassess his priorities. In 1989, he returned to Navarra, settling in Tudela and later in Fontellas (2003), where he became a key figure in the Ribera de Navarra art scene. His work explores deep themes of love, passion, and mortality, reflecting his evolving artistic and philosophical perspective. Conversations with him reveal a fascination with eros and thanatos, central to his creative expression. Now at his artistic peak, Ismael remains rooted in Fontellas while maintaining an international presence, frequently traveling to Miami and New York. A true multidisciplinary artist, his diverse and prolific work stands as a testament to the transformative power of creativity.
