Space is something we experience rather than seeing it. Only if we change our point of view we create a complete image of where we are. Like scientists and artists have noticed in the past, space is thus connected with time. Sometimes space is also used as a mental metaphore: spatiality as a reflection of the inner psychological world. The abstract paintings of Roland Aalbers explore the possibilities of spatiality in 2D. By means of abstraction, use of colour and the lack of a logical perspective, subtle suggested spatiality is disturbed. Light and shadow effects contribute to an alienated space and time experience. The paintings often consist of simple geometrical shapes. One or two shapes can be the motive for a painting. Repetition, overlaps, symmetry and reflection create a cohesive composition. The use of colour is often rich in contrast and carefully put together. Complementary colours and intense accents interact with each other and with spatiality. His musical education as classical pianist might not be visible at first sight, but it does play a role. The abstraction and the element of time of music are present in his paintings. The use of one or two motives for a composition is also recognizable in the music of classical composers. Other similarities are bright colour accents and use of contrasting colours. Furthermore, you can recognize influences of architecture and constructivism.
