About The Artwork

Conceptually, my paintings explore the relationship between nature and civilization in a perpetual state of flux. Much of my inspiration comes from observing the raw aesthetic of urban decay – textures and marks on distressed surfaces that are a result of continuous activity and exposure to the elements, such as rust stained concrete walls, weathered signage and worn pavement. Symbolic of continuation and change, these circles represent a world in constant motion. Time keeps ticking. Wheels keep turning. Created by multi-step process of layering, sanding and over-painting. Painted on a hand crafted, high quality birch panel, includes a 1.75 inch wooden border and arrives ready to hang. Signed on back.

Originally from Mobile, Alabama (US), Phillip Livingston is a contemporary American artist in Greenville, South Carolina. Combining elements of typography, pop art and abstract expressionism, his paintings explore the relationship between nature and civilization. Inspiration comes from studying the raw aesthetic of urban decay – textures and marks that are a result of continuous daily activity and exposure to the elements, such as rust stained concrete walls, weathered signage, worn pavement, and surfaces in various states of transition, and how the 'new' overlaps the old. This juxtaposition reveals a constant state chaos and order and instills a unique sense of authenticity as it tells the never-ending story of nature and civilization. Phillip received a BFA in Graphic Design and Painting from the University of South Alabama, and completed his graduate studies in Art Direction at The Portfolio Center in Atlanta. Before becoming a full-time artist, he worked a multi year career in advertising as an art director and graphic designer.
