About The Artwork

This is the second piece in a triptych, 'Imprisoned' being the first and 'Liberated', the third. It is called 'Condemned' because that was the experience of the two women who inspired the painting, known personally to the artist. Through it, the artist hopes to cause the observer to reflect on the power of the spoken word in relation to their own life and relationships. The first woman was a colleague of the artist named 'Dolores' - which means suffering in Spanish. She told the artist that her parents had wanted a boy but she was born instead, so she was named 'Dolores', to express her parent's disappointment. She grew up knowing that she was not what her parents wanted. This story has stayed with the artist all his life. The second woman was brought up to believe that her opinion was worthless, by a father who was both very attentive but also very controlling. This man used his affection as a tool to crush his daughter. In the picture the woman is surrounded by words of condemnation which are scrawled on her bedroom walls. I chose this subject matter because I it is something very close to my heart, having suffered from self-hatred, depression and low self-esteem for many years as a result of words which formed me as I was growing up.
