Contortionist Painting

This was the first painting I made after a trip to Rome and Naples where I had looked at a lot of frescoes. It was harder than I expected to translate what I had seen into my own painting. I started this canvas without a plan (something I rarely do). After making some abstract shapes, and then seeing it wasn't working out, with a rag, I wiped and smeared what I had started. Suddenly the cone shape came into focus and I saw it as a hat. The figure of the boy on the left emerged somewhat spontaneously. Dwarf soldiers that I had noticed in some of those Roman paintings were in the back of my mind. Next, I had to figure out what to pair him with. I found a picture of a carnival performer and saw it as a good fit. The stick and the hoop were used to connect these two characters and add a layer mystery and magic.
