All Jemal's realistic paintings are painted using the technique of the old masters, who used several layers of oil and glaze. Glazing is a successive application of transparent layer of paint over another dried layer of paint. When glazing in oils artist applies multiple layers and each layer affects the final oil painting and gives the picture the effect of transparency. The task of this method of work is to obtain complex shades of colour by optical mixing of "pure" colours, superimposed one on top of the other. Jemal likes to paint simple still lifes and applies minimalism style, which developed in the late 1950s as a rejection of the abstract expressionism, to his realistic paintings. "All I want anyone to get out of my [works] and all I ever get out of them is the fact that you can see the whole idea without any confusion. At the same time, objects in the artist’s still lifes carry a symbolic message, with which J.Gugunava seeks to convey the meaning of the narrative. This still life deserves to be auctioned at Sotheby's. It is almost 25 years old. In the 90s, when this still life was created, the artist faced great difficulties in his life, but believed that good times would come. The artist thinks that life is full of contrasts, often incompatible with each other. A white plate as a circle, placed in the center of the picture, is a symbol of constant movement while a heavy dark bottle personifies stability, an anchor, the gravity of the earth. These two things flow from one state to another. Life is changeable. Light will always come after darkness.
