ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inspired by an algae pond on the grounds of a French Chateau, this piece embodies the tranquility and complexity of the glorious ecosystem I visited daily. Each time I looked at the pond the colors would change, the shapes would vary - it was an endless source of inspiration. I’m wanting to share the feeling of awe and delight that I experienced by observing and painting the pond. I didn’t want to do an exact representation (a photo works for that) but rather, I wanted to present the memory of it, with diverse colors and usually invented or exaggerated shapes. I woke from photos and sketches, but these were merely starting points, beginnings; often the end result was very different. Having just seen an exhibition from Monet and Mitchell, their use of Nature in their works inspired me in this series. I used oils to paint this series because I think the numerous glazes best captures the glow from the reflections found in the water.

I look at the world around me and wonder and question; this leads to inspiration, which leads to expression. I consider myself lucky to be able to express my emotions through painting, as it has led to an interesting life. One of my main objectives as an artist is to interpret the emotion of my subject. I feel it is imperative to have a story, a reason behind every piece. Art needs to move you emotionally, spiritually, or intellectually; without that interpretation from the artist it is merely reduced to replication. I enjoy using the transformative quality of light as a means of expression. Light can affect moods, create unusual patterns, and change a mundane setting into one that is amazing. The integration of light and emotional expression provide the impetus behind most of my work. I also derive inspiration and awe from Nature. Many of my paintings have a direct link to something that I have observed first hand. From this reality, I then create my own.
