"Crossing Over" is closely tied to my own journey. A few years ago, I left my home in Germany to start a completely new chapter in Texas. Curiosity is at the heart of Jennifer Vahlbruch’s artistic practice, as she explores the quiet transitions and perceived insignificance of everyday elements, inviting viewers to shift their perspective and discover beauty in the overlooked. The German-born, self-taught, and award-winning multi-disciplinary artist and photographer, now based in Conroe, Texas, is known for her ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. With over a decade of professional photography experience, Vahlbruch has exhibited internationally, from Art Basel Miami to Kunsthalle Kempten in Germany, where her debutante show drew more than 800 visitors. In 2013, she received a project grant from the Hilde Frey Foundation, and her work has since been recognized by prestigious awards, including the Luxembourg Art Prize Artistic Achievements and the Epson International Pano Awards. Her pieces have been featured in Paper City, The Photograp[her] Magazine, and the Houston Chronicle. Her works have found their way into museum collections in Germany as well as private collections across several countries. Vahlbruch’s artistic journey is deeply influenced by her experience of emigrating from Germany to the U.S., a shift that sharpened her sensitivity to perception, belonging, and transformation. Living between two worlds has gifted her with contrasting influences: the grounded strength and layered histories of Europe, like steadfast mountains shaped over centuries, and the open, ever-changing spirit of Texas, like a coastline meeting the horizon. Just as these landscapes differ, so do the cultures she inhabits, each offering its own rhythms, narratives, and ways of seeing. This interplay of place and culture infuses her work with a sense of duality: both anchored and exploratory, steeped in tradition yet reaching for new horizons.
