About The Artwork

This colorful, contemporary still life oil painting captures the beauty of golden yellow daffodils in a unique, inspired style. A rich sense of patterning and line allow the objects in the still life to become a series of connected silhouettes that engage the imagination. A sophisticated palette of blues, greens and shades of violet create a wonderful peaceful feeling in the context of the warmer touches of yellow, orange and cream. The painting incorporates a beautiful sense of geometry in the midst of pattern and texture in a way that's interesting and delightfully unexpected. Inspiration for this painting really came from some of my experiences going on picnics. The blue and green checked cloth has traveled with me on a few of those experiences. I always like to bring daffodils if they are in season. They have a very simple beauty that feels so in keeping with the idea of a spontaneous picnic. I painted this on a masonite panel in oils. It is a signed original that is ready for framing.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
