Harkrader attended the Mountain Lake Symposiums and Workshops in the 80s. These historic conferences featured luminaries; including Sally Mann, John Cage, Suzi Gablik, Howard Finster, Wayne Thiebaud and others. These salon-like workshops had a profound effect on Harkrader’s emerging art.

In 2011, Roanoke Valley Sister Cities selected Harkrader for an artist residency in Opole, Poland which included a dozen artists from Eastern and Western Europe.
