The phrase “dawn is a friend to the muses” or “aurora musis amica” is often attributed to Johannes Christenius (1599–1672), a Latin poet. However, the exact origin of this specific phrase in Latin literature is not well-documented. It encapsulates a sentiment that has been echoed throughout history in various cultures, emphasizing the inspirational quality of the morning time for artists, writers, and thinkers. The phrase is a poetic way to express the idea that the muses, the goddesses of the arts in Greek mythology, favor the dawn for creative endeavors. While the phrase is widely recognized, its first appearance in classical texts remains unclear.
