Dear Francis, “Mother's Lingerie & Champagne" I have painted these 6ft linen canvas diptych depicting stories of Francis Bacon’s life with his emerging homosexuality - the young artist was harshly disciplined by One of Bacon's most famous subjects was a friend and lover, George Dyer. They met when Dyer, a petty criminal from east London, dropped through the skylight of Bacon's muse’s house one night in 1963, intending to commit robbery. Francis came home drunk and told Dyer if he slept with him, he wouldn’t call the police. Bacon painted twisted portraits of Dyer including him in his underwear. My paintings piece the story together, grappling with sadness and respect for the man and painter. painted and drank with close friends (George Dyer. Lucian Freud), and the results convey a striking emotional and psychological intensity. The drinking and festivities were held at the Colony Room, a very bright green painted members club in the Soho of London.
