About the Artist

Jolita Linkeviciute

Lithuania

Lithuania based artist, painter and writer.
I am a self-taught artist. Since childhood, as far as I can remember, I have been drawing. It was an opportunity to deep down in to the world of imagination and survive, so that reality would not scare me. I was the youngest in Art school and I developed the fear that I could not draw well like others. Instead the Academy of Arts, I chose university and communication studies, but the hunger for painting was very strong. I decided to fulfill my dream on canvas. To perceive the reality as it is, through the studies of psychology and semiotics. My paintings became figurative, realistic, like the narratives- litteral. An authorial style was formed by studying Rembrandt, Velasquez, Lucien Freud paintings and thinking.
Over the decade, I painted series of portraits of young artists - one of the most interesting project to understand person‘s inner landscape. The idea of realism in this digital era is exclusive and more expansive than people give a credit for. I choose subjects (carefully selected acquaintances) and using drawing (etching), photography session and only then – paint on canvas, examining and exploring these individuals, their identity and psychology. I paint slowly. Painting is always psychology: it‘s a silent dialogue between psyche, mind, body, space: people are communicating with their face and body, gestures. They also communicate with a painter, space (room) and with viewer. These relationships are always developing, liquid. Doing a portrait is about seeing what you didn‘t see before and it can be extraordinary investigation. Every painting and every sitter is different - with certain kind of vibration and there are some eroticism, because eroticism is a part of life. Human face is a topography of emotions, has the emotional vocabulary. I‘m interested in bringing kind of drama, that I have found in paintings from the past. In ancient world painting and theatre was considered very close.
14 personal exhibitions in different cities of Lithuania (2010-2024)
The paintings were acquired by collectors in Germany, Norway, Los Angeles, London.
