ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I think of my work as being personal and being an expression of emotions and dreams. I am interested in the idea of the dream as being an expression of an unconscious story being revealed. .

Ingvill Gaarder born 1973, studied fine art painting, illustration, media art and photography at Kunstskolen i Bergen (Norway), University of Houston (USA) and Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London (UK) achieving a Bachelor and a Master's degree. Her work has been exhibited by various galleries in Norway and overseas in the UK, Iceland, Germany, France and the US. "During the process of painting I attempt to document physical and psychological presence, investigating and experimenting with the communicative function of colour, pattern and form and exploring how these interact. They are a combination of chance and deliberation, functioning as an experimentation and composition of mark making which create gateways into suggesting both a physical and emotional energy in the course of making the work.  The starting point of each painting is inspired from a wide area of landscapes, architecture and interiors which will inform the course of painting. I believe that art has the ability to communicate and transform and I look at my work and process as a personal expression of the unconscious, dreams and the immediate emotional. Using mark making to create rhythm, I often use a variation of bold colours to build my paintings. Creating abstract shapes and patterns attempting to make an ambiguous space. The image is then worked and re-worked until the image is “found”. Only when a balance and integration is achieved I feel that the painting is finished.
