Devastation 2020 11”x14”x0.75” mixed media on canvas is a combination of my Imprint series where I use found objects to paint with or through and my liquid series where I mix acrylic paints, inks and let the chemical reaction create the work on wood boards or panels. The inspiration for this work comes from the object itself.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This artwork captivates with its abstract, almost cosmic qualities, inviting viewers into a complex interplay of texture, color, and form. At the center, a large, circular formation dominates the canvas, resembling a celestial body or an intricate, organic pattern. The palette is meticulously chosen, with a dominant use of deep midnight blue and specks of rich gold, creating a striking contrast against the neutral, creamy background. This juxtaposition not only captivates the eye but also evokes a sense of depth and mystery. The central form exhibits a fascinating texture, with thick, almost impasto applications of paint that produce tactile ridges and valleys. This tactile quality invites a closer examination and almost urges the viewer to reach out and touch the surface. The dark, spine-like protrusions radiate outwards from the center, adding dynamism and movement to the composition. The intricate detailing within this form could be indicative of an organism under a microscope or an unexplored planetary terrain, making the piece both enigmatic and scientifically intriguing. Accentuating the organic feel are the splashes and drips surrounding the central form. These errant marks break the uniformity of the creamy backdrop, suggesting spontaneity and the artist’s playful engagement with the medium. The subtle shadings of grey and black among the drips add a layer of complexity, speaking to the controlled chaos often found in nature. This artwork’s unique appeal lies in its ability to straddle the line between abstraction and representation. It commands attention with its bold use of color and texture, while simultaneously inviting contemplation about its deeper meanings and origins. The evocative central form, the masterful use of contrasts, and the intricate detailing collectively make this piece a compelling exploration of the abstract and the cosmic.

I have come to a realization about myself and my art. I am impatient and I have need for instant gratification. I get frustrated with time consuming traditional techniques and want to skip ahead to the end. These are the reasons that I am a series artist. I like to experiment with an idea or a technique until I am satisfied with the result. The inspiration for my work is in trying the new techniques. Having freedom of expression and not being limited to one style or technique of making art are paramount to my identity as an artist. I love the many different processes of making art and experimenting with new ways of creating art. My inspiration stems from color, music, literature, and the excitement about the unknown possibilities of taking everyday objects and using them in a way that differs from what the manufacturer intended. I use a combination of found objects, acrylic paints, and aerosol paints to create abstract patterns on wood and canvas. Some of my methods include combining different chemicals and paint on paper or in plastic or wood box frames and using centrifugal force and gravity to distort vivid colors that are mixed or thrown right on the canvas. The result is the distortion of lines and contours, and layers of translucent or opaque paints on the canvas or in random patterns.
