The painting was inspired by a range of artists from different historical periods (though the Baroque is predominant). Vermeer, Zurbaran, Van Dyke and later Manet. However there are many other great painters of fabric that have had an impact upon this and other images. Here the fabrics structural and surface qualities create a pattern of tonal and colour change which occurs accross the picture plane and. This provides a harmonious arrangement that encourages visual meditation. The sensation of light which illuminates and describes a visual phenomenon, presented before the viewer. This painting was the result of a lengthy period of compositional and subject arrangement involving drawings and digital images in order to capture the desired composition. This is a small painting, however it could be scaled up to become a much bigger piece and could also operate as a Trompe l'oeil piece suitable for a larger space. It was carried out using quality artists oil paint and a gesso panel with cradle.

I am a painter based in East London (Hackney). I have a small studio and work from arrangements of objects. I usually base my ideas around disposable items, fabric and plastic/containers. Referencing a number of artists from different periods I tend to work from direct observation and use a limited palette. I also sometimes employ and create carefully corriographed photographs and use a camera obscura for compositional purposes. Subjects are selected for their reduced colour. I am interested in ambiguous arrangements of objects and spatial illusion.
