Direction FIeld Blue 2 Painting

My Direction Field works are an attempt to represent the relationship between the worldly and the infinite. Just as the world as we experience it is composed of distinct moments and events that are part of something continuous and eternal, each painting is constructed from discrete parts, shapes that interlock to create a fluid and immense pattern that swells and moves and is constrained only by the limited space of the canvas. I am greatly influenced by Islamic ideas of the spiritual nature of pattern and geometry. In Islamic art, symmetry is used to represent the underlying order and balance of the universe and repetition is used to imply an infinite continuum of existence. In using these devices myself I intend for my work to be contemplative, to evoke a sense of the expansive and transcendent nature of being.
