ABOUT THE ARTWORK

●What/who inspired the work? Human life viewed from afar, the beauty of creating an orderly life in the midst of disorder, and our life leading to an encounter with each other inspire my work. The point here represents people. ●What do you hope its viewers will feel/think? Through the work, I want you to feel a world where every dot becomes everyone and every person becomes one dot. ●Why did you choose the medium, subject matter, style? Through research on acrylic paint itself, excluding objects, I mix water appropriately so that the mass of dots (three-dimensional effect) is realized as planned, or test the density of each color sufficiently. The dots are made formatively on the background that has been firmly painted with acrylic paints so that it becomes a hard ground layer in advance. Obsessive compulsive research and repeated practice are repeated so that the size and shape of the dots match the plan, but sometimes they become atypical dots, curled up and rippled. This reminds us that all beings, or different beings, look like a single dot from a distance, and asks the question of existence and essence through the use of dots.

About Me - I am a dot in the world. The relationships that started with one dot called ‘I’ on the canvas of the world goes back and forth between dots, that is, our life begins with the relationship between you and me. My intention is to introduce the aspects of such lives here. About my work - The process of my artwork is the same process as an important or minor relationship turning into the smaller whole called ‘us', as well as the little bit bigger whole than that, and the giant whole beyond the one-dimensional stage of completion called ‘you and I’. The purpose of this process is to show the inside story of the pinnacle, the final destination of a tearful story and sublime beauty where, being vulnerable, we are given one form and name. A dot is an expression of human beings, including myself. This dot is a historically immaterial thing with all kinds of organic existential values melted in. However, not two dots are the same among those uncountable dots. Therefore, in order to make a dot a completely independent dot, I catch my breath before making each dot. The many and unspecified dots in my paintings individually exist in a pure and primitive form. It reminds us of human beings’ birth conditions. One living being that starts - after a great competition - is settled into its mother’s womb and confronts the whole world, and that makes a dot. Then, it continues its life between two dots, as in a relationship between you and I, developing the ties. My painting expresses those individual forms that seek for oneness and unity in the connotative world. I attempt to show not the whole, extended to a specific form but to reveal every part of the whole. In order to understand the whole, it is necessary to grasp the order and harmony of the whole as well as the complete form of the individual accomplishing its own order and harmony. The dots creating my painting are the completed work of this individual. They can also be an expression of the fundamental power of nature in viewing the whole. I wanted those dots to create the beauty of the order that all individuals become all, just like a dot becomes an island, a continent, or universe by relinquishing complicated techniques and unstable forms. The start of all this great structure, as well as the universe itself perhaps, can be seen as a dot. That is why it is a dot. A dot. Therefore, every dot has its own spirit and reason for existence.
