About The Artwork

Taken from a series of drawings and colour studies whilst in Seattle. The light during the late August/ early September time of my visit was perfect for the formation of the angular shapes of shadows accross roads, flyovers, skyscrapers and passageways. It was first visit to a large American city, so everywhere was new and interesting. Smith’s tower was also a building that I remember from my childhood where I used to draw it from pictures, so it was great to see it in person. It features in a number of my artworks from this time (another being ‘Downtown Seattle‘).

Tom Voyce (b. 1989) is an established UK painter with international exposure. His subject matter comprises of a variety of different themes such as airports, railway stations, roads and bridges and other places of transit. Voyce’s compositions consistently demonstrate an interest in the formal elements of composition: structure, perspective, shape and light. His paintings are accounts of fleeting moments within a landscape; the fall of light on a building, or the shadows cast by a motorway flyover. The strength in these pieces lies not in their faithful depiction of a landscape, but in their suggestion of a sense of place, of being present within a particular space at a particular moment. Artists such as Edward Hopper and Richard Diebenkorn have been immensely influential in his development, as have more contemporary artists- American painter Ben Aronson amongst others. Hopper's proverb, "if you can say it in words, then there's no reason to paint it", forms a principal part of my attitude towards the uniquely communicative purpose of art. His latest body of work entitled 'In Transit' is influenced by travel and place, exploring the landscapes and cityscapes of Canada, the United States, Fiji and New Zealand. www.tom-voyce.com tomrlvoyce@gmail.com
