About The Artwork
Sir Frances Drake the famous maritime icon who played bowls on Plymouth Hoe when the French Fleet were massing in the channel was given the governorship of this strategic lump of rock at the entrance to Plymouth Docks and the Devonport Naval Docks in the 16th century. Today little has changed from Drake's days...a few ariels, a jetty and the remains of a small fortification. But, well worth a Plein Air visit with my folding box easel. Oils and pallet knives plus a 1.5-inch flat brush did the trick. Very lucky to have such history on my doorstep.
