ABOUT THE ARTWORK
My landscapes always have an odd juxtaposition between foreground and background. To me they convey a sense of isolation that is indifferent to human beings. The strange perspective throws the viewer off guard since it's difficult to place oneself in the picture. To me this painting evokes a sense of beauty, loneliness, and infinite possibilities. I began the painting with a red undercoat and created the image with a limited palette of ochre, sienna, umber, and naples yellow applied in thin glazes. The red under painting lends a subtle warmth to the result.

I've never imagined being anything but an artist, although there was a time after graduating college that i had to wait for my ideas to come of age. Although I'm a native of the East Coast, after working in Santa Barbara since 1976 and the California light, colors, and aesthetic has been the strongest influence on my work. I categorize my paintings as Contemporary California Realism.
