About The Artwork

My several residencys in the UAE and Saudi Arabia inspired me to create this work. On the painting you can see a sun glowing desert landscape with the cool turquoise sea in the background contrasting to the golden sunny colors. The desert is moved by the wind forming sand ripples made with fine sand. Two Arab horses are galloping in the endless desert with joy. They are made out of metal, gilded with gold and fixed to the canvas with a little bit of distance. In history a pure Arabian horse type mare was named Safanad ("the pure") by the Queen of Sheba.Solomon gave a stallion, Zad el-Raheb ("Gift to the Rider"), to the Banu Azd people when they came to pay tribute to the king. This legendary stallion was said to be faster than the zebra and the gazelle, and every hunt with him was successful, thus when he was put to stud, he became a founding sire of legend. The Bedouins bestowed the title "Drinker of the Wind" to the first Arabian horse.

Already as a little girl, Lydia was a curious annoying assistant in her father's graphic design studio, always on the lookout from the leftovers to conjure up creative art pieces. At the same time, she was able to build up a solid foundation early on. The artist friends of her family, especially the painters, then inspired her and it soon became clear that creativity makes her completely happy. The exploration of the world and Lydia´s environment then started  moving her to any kind of visual creativity and is still on tour for any new elements. The human form serves as the primary subject for Lydia´s paintings, receiving and reflecting a thought-process partly rooted in Expressionism, in individual and symbolic imagery. The characters are always captured in motion. The preference to fix processes has aroused my long term work with cartoon animation films. As in the "Figuration-Libre" painting movement, which came into being as a reaction to the over-rationalism of conceptual art, she is drawn to using vigorous and narrative pictorial language in which she combines elements from traditional and archaic artforms with modern references to daily life and subculture, arriving at an ironic critical social and cultural imagery. By creating visual interest a returning key in her art works is to promote solidarity and awareness by conveying human rights messages against persisting inequalities and various forms of oppression . Feeling, emotion and spontaneity are more important to her than perfection, reason, and regimentation. Not only canvas and oil or acrylic colors are used for her abstract-figurative artworks also her imagination runs to pick up various materials to be combined and re-elaborated. A quantitative contrast, using different-sized color surfaces in combination with contrasting materials such as silk, aged wood, unfired clay, bamboo, burlap, matt- and glossy coats of paint, generate maximum optical tension in the overall concept. Sand and blades of grass find their own perfect position in the inner image in which those elements cannot avoid to make part of it. Jute and silk fragments dress the canvas leading the dance of characters; everything seems to move; Lydia´s paintings light up with life and nature and thanks to the raw materials that mother earth offers, she can tell a rich universe, letting space to the unlimited possibilities.
