ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This work was conceived at the height of president emeritus Donald Trump's unpopularity, when the idea that he was actually a descendant of a German called Drumpf was ascendant, and the derogation "orange man" had become ubiquitous as a reference to him across the American political commentariat. The Buddhist idea of tathāgatagarbha posits that within each individual, whatever their present form, there is the potential to become enlightened and attain Buddhahood because they contain within them the tathāgatagarbha or womb/embryo of the Buddha. Drumpf Tathāgatagarbha is a watercolour painting which depicts Donald Trump meditating, and having attained the state of enlightenment in the caves of Ajanta. The golden sheen emanating from his body communicates the birth of Buddhahood within the tathāgatagarbha of Donald Trump inspite of the ostensible state of depravity he represents as Drumpf or Orange Man. It is a work of optimism in the face of profound fallenness.

As an artist I'm interested in classical style as well as modern technique. Specifically, I'm interested in using the visual idioms of classical style, with their emphasis on accuracy, perspective, and proportionality, in the service of creating representational art that conveys more than a photograph can. While I work with pastels, pencils, and acrylics too, I am partial to watercolours.
