About The Artwork
This painting, which is unframed and ready to hang, was inspired by the country around Broken Hill, which I have visited many times. I love the vast distances and ever-changing colours of this unique environment, and I have documented this landscape over the years in both subtle and dramatic weather conditions. This work, painted in oil on linen, constitutes a common sight in this period of prolonged drought which pervades much of Australia at the present time. I choose to paint the landscape in extreme conditions. The poet, Dorothea MacKellar, described Australia as 'a wilful, lavish land'; I like the challenge of capturing climatic unpredictability, while simultaneously highlighting the beauty and drama of the Australian environment.

I live in Melbourne, Australia, where I studied Fine Art, majoring in painting and printmaking. Initially influenced by JMW Turner and the Australian Impressionists, I have been painting and exhibiting atmospheric landscapes for over 40 years, and won awards both in Australia and overseas. My artistic career began at 16 when I attended life drawing classes in the 1960s at the National Gallery Art School in Melbourne with John Brack and Ian Armstrong. I have worked as a graphic artist, art reviewer and arts writer contributor for various publications, including ‘The Melbourne Times’ and ‘Imprint’ magazine. In the 1980s, I was manager of an antique print gallery, ‘l’estampe originale’, in Hawthorn, and lectured in art history at the Melbourne CAE. Later I worked in web design and art marketing, but now paint full-time.
