I trained as an artist/illustrator in Sheffield and have a fascination with the use of realistic elements in my work. I worked as a lecturer in further education for over thirty years teaching painting, print making and illustration before finally giving this up to pursue my true passion – painting. I have always been drawn to the mechanical and man-made elements; you could say I have a fascination with things that are shiny! In the past I have produced a number of private commissions including a number for the Royal Air Force. I have also produced a number of wildlife scenes. My current paintings are based around reflections in glass and other shiny surfaces. Many also embody certain architectural elements. The painting generally show parts of a reflected image and parts of what are observed through the glass with an element of distortion. Works vary in scale and are produced on either board or canvas depending on size. Many are of local scenes and some of the featured ones show the Pier Head in Liverpool and Church Street. I have also produced a number of paintings based around places I have visited both nationally and internationally. At a glance the works may appear photographic but this is somewhat misleading. I use a camera as a sketch book and the paintings produced are the result of information gained from parts of several photographs rather than being a pure copy from one source image. It almost goes without saying that the production of a piece of work with this intricacy and detail takes time!
