Felted New Zealand Merino wool and silk fibres, treated with Microseal UV and stain protection.

The artwork has been created using individual tufts of hand dyed merino wool fibre - I liken these tufts to brush strokes. These tufts are arranged and layered (up to 8 layers in some areas on this work) and then wet felted to bind them together. Silk fibres are used on the surface of the work, their sheen adding detail, depth and definition. It has taken years of practise achieve optimum control of the process and the fibres during the felting process.

The “Echoes” series explores aspects of my past, that time has coalesced into a snapshot of sorts. A time when I was engineer by day and crafting housewife at the weekend,
I would feel a tension build until making provided an outlet.

The soft organic form represents geological features that I would observe during my working day. Stitching references the craft pursuits that my hands would crave, but also the constraint that I felt on my time. It is at first glance linear, but on closer inspection, slight irregularities in the form and direction of the individual stitches become apparent.

Artwork is mounted on a ply support and presented in a white tray frame. For hanging, the beautifully designed frame is supplied with a cord.

I am a contemporary fibre artist residing in New Zealand, creating abstract artworks. Inspired by a fascination with tiny or hidden details, nuances of light and emotion in our physical and spiritual environment, my work is often informed by my background in engineering. Having always been passionate about expressing my creativity, for the last 5 years I have taken a medium that is traditionally “crafted” and developed my own technique and artistic voice. I find the process of painting and sculpting with unspun fibres fascinating with every new piece that I create. There is an alchemy to the process of transforming wisps of fibre into something with form, structure and strength. Feltmaking is an ancient art form which allows the artist to explore a subject in a unique way. Incredibly fragile at the outset of the process, becoming increasingly tactile and physical as the fibres intertwine and lock together. Becoming fascinated with the fragility and beauty of the fibre art in the early stages of the process, I have recently developed a method of creating and capturing unique, ephemeral fibre art works. These I reproduce as fibre art prints.
