ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Oil on aluminium. After the final layer of paint was applied, masking tape was removed from the top and left-hand sides to reveal the raw aluminium surface it was painted on. The thin aluminium sheet is mounted onto a smaller wooden frame. This projects the painting off the wall by approx 2-3cm and allows it to be wall-hung like any other painting. The “Engineering” series was based on photographs of an engineering plant in Dunfermline. I was attracted to the geometric shapes and vivid colours of the equipment used in the factories.

Influenced by Buddhist philosophies on the nature of reality and perception; I gradually eliminate in my drawing and painting what I feel are unnecessary distractions from my original source photograph by constantly paring down the elements within it. I work mainly with oils on canvas or with oil bars/pastels or conte on paper. More recently I have been experimenting with different surface materials such as aluminium, steel, glass, perspex and concrete; whilst studying different ways in which to present my work in a more sculptural sense.
