About The Artwork

My girlfriend and I have been fans of the Eurovision for a long time, although we never watch the whole thing--we wait for the recaps. There is this band from Moldova called The Sunstroke Project who participated a few times, but somehow they were always years that we missed I guess because they never hit our radar. What a travesty. So at some point in 2017 I was randomly watching YouTube, specifically weird international music videos, and I stumble across the "Epic Sax Guy". Once I was able to reattach my jaw (it literally dropped off my face), I knew this was a defining moment and my life would never be the same. Now a few months before this the girlfriend had convinced me to hang art at the local library where she worked. The deadline was steadily approaching, I hadn't hung anything in years, and I was not very happy about having to leave my hideout. Witnessing the Epic Sax guy, however, totally changed my attitude. I went and grabbed an old square canvas that had been given to me by my artist grandma, a woman I would credit with being a huge influence on me as an artist, I grabbed some bright colors because I was in a bright mood, and I just went to town. Where the painting ended up, I would normally call a second pass because I like to sit with them a few times to really refine the figures and details. My grandma came by, though, and when I showed her the work in progress she said "Oh my God, Stevie, this is beautiful. Do not touch it." Like I said, I would normally have touched the crap out of it a few more times at least, but when grandma says it's done, it must be done. I divided the piece into four squares in an attempt to capture the essence of the repetitive dance Epic Sax Guy does while playing his saxophone solo, and I feel like it does a pretty good job of that. Can't say that I have ever done a piece quite so bright, raw, and personal before, and it definitely feels unfinished when I look at it. None of this is bad though, it helps it jump out from my other work just like Epic Sax Guy jumps out of the screen and into your consciousness. Check him out!

I became an artist at a very young age after discovering it was socially acceptable for artists to own books full of naked people. Over the years I have made pieces for fun, friends, profit, romance, to burn as sacrifices to the art gods, pass time, blend in, trade for beer, tacos, drugs, privileges or favors, while playing video games, socializing, going to sleep, doing homework or chores, on a dare, while driving, sleeping, blindfolded, with the lights out, wearing sunglasses underwater, using paint, garbage, blood, other things... I most often create figurative or expressionist paintings, even though I don't formally know what those words mean, and my process involves blocking out basic shapes and colors, and then coming back across with wave after wave of manic insanity until the details are at a place that I am happy with. Many times I will just be so disgusted with my work that I will paint over it, so most of my finished work has about 5 or 6 other paintings living underneath.
