ABOUT THE ARTWORK
My intention with this series I call "Zen Still Life" was to create a peaceful, contemplative composition with simple, natural objects. I employed the old-master approach of using a solid red undercoat followed by layers of purple, orange, and umber to create the background, leaving a pool of light in the center to illuminate the subject matter. The larger scale creates a visual impact without jarring colors or artifice. I hope the viewer will feel a sense of timelessness and calm simplicity.

I was born and brought up in Boston, Massachusetts. I can't remember a time when I didn't have a pencil in my hand and a pad of paper to draw on. I've never imagined being anything but an artist, although there was a time after graduating college that i had to wait for my ideas to come of age. Although I'm a native of the East Coast, after working in Santa Barbara since 1976 and the California light, colors, and aesthetic has been the strongest influence on my work. I categorize my paintings as Contemporary California Realism.
