ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Created originally for a fall show about ghosts and spirits, I was drawn to the idea of a durational performance and the possibility of achieving some hallucinogenic experience through extreme repetition. I focused on a personal mantra and repeatedly wrote and painted the phrase, "every journey begins with a single step" across a piece of plywood for 5 hours. The long painting time shows how simple things evolve their meaning over time. The natural wood absorbs the thin layers of paint and partially dictates the final aesthetic of this mantra when painted.
