David Samuels: I paint abstract art that explode with the passion and inspiration to venture in the world of mixed media on both large scale canvases and wood panels. There isn't necessarily a sought out plan when I begin a new piece. Every painting is a mystery, every painting is a new discovery. I love colors, and creating complicated textures. They are selectively scratched, eroded, or dissolved properly to reach a certain balance. Several different methods are used to build layers that are incorporated for the surface such as paint, paper or other items that I can find to form a thin or thick coat. I usually leave traces of doodles, handwriting, graffiti, and often broken lines to a poem that have personal meaning to me hidden in the backgrounds. The messages sometimes show irony or relating symbolism to the piece. With the element of surprise and what I call "The Controlled Chaos" technique the interaction as a whole, can be very exciting to encounter. Besides the secret ingredients that I use to blend beautifully for a certain tone, most of my work is created with acrylic, latex, enamel, and spray paint on large scale canvases or wood panels. I use different tools such as putty knives, brushes, sponges, my fingers, and other items to provide a rough or a smooth texture. There is not really one interpretation of my work. I feel a painting is finished when it has it's own presence, it's own individuality, when it contains a sense of life. Often, there are still questions within the piece itself that remain unanswered allowing it to become an open ended exploration. As an abstract expressionist, I enjoy showing the contrast between layers, opaque to transparent, and dark to light. Many ideas and images pass through my mind when I paint. Some of the meanings behind a painting can stem from a memory, a place, a mood that I am in, a person, or simply just a situation. The idea that the art I create becoming part of peoples lives, is very rewarding. I hope that when someone looks at my work that they are invited to contemplate it, to observe it in sort of a meditative way that the painting will speak to them. I feel doing this will give them their own experience through imagination. I show quality and structural integrity upon every finished piece. My aim is to capture the spontaneity or the loud outburst that tends to hide in the quiet energy that dwells within all of us.
