Jessica Baldivieso’s work focuses on painting a linear space on a flat surface, suggesting depth and perspective. She occasionally uses picture frames that she has found and repurposed to create a painting surface that addresses an interior and exterior perspective, the painting versus the frame. Baldivieso likes to bring to attention the boundaries of the painting as well as the scale of the artwork in relation to the viewers and space around them. She sometimes uses mirrors which help her open up another space that extends the artwork into an alternative location, making the work part physical experience and part projection. Baldivieso uses lines to construct a structure that unites the visual composition of the space. With the help of tape, she achieves different kinds of depth that are more visible and tactile on the white paintings, where she uses many layers of gesso to build up the thickness of the paint and create subtle changes in the “topography” of the painting. The paintings are not a narrative of anything. The work is about the abstract idea of making a good artwork, and seeing specific materials merging together, performing as a unity in a total act of presentation, a one time event.
