About The Artwork

Award-winning artist, Geoffrey C. Smith, gives life to an original oil painting "Kingfisher Flying". This charming character appears to be suspended just above the water, like a graceful flying ballerina. Smith captures the perceived motion of the kingfisher by positioning the bird upright, a generally unnatural view of any bird in flight. But not for the stately belted kingfisher. The upright positioning of this subject is distinguished as mid-air, frozen in time just before it speed dives into the water to catch its prey. Smith dramatizes movement in this standstill moment- the anticipation- right before the hunting bird dives and the moments that follow. Geoffrey, an artist that is often compared to John James Audubon, accentuates the kingfisher's chest with a combination of red and yellow to give the impression of a rust-colored chest. The background is slightly warmed to contrast the depths of the water below. His distribution of darker versus lighter colors has the effect of focusing the eye most clearly on the bird and the water, again posturing the observer to formulate the sequence of events. This is an original oil and wax on canvas and is framed in a beautiful hardwood, black-colored frame with gold-colored inlay. The World-Famous Artist, who is most recently known for his "Rise Above Lotus" work going into the Vatican, Geoffrey C. Smith is an American wildlife sculptor, painter, and photographer born in Northern California. Smith was taught wood carving as a young child from his Grandfather "Snook". As a young man, he moved to Montana. After a successful career as a decoy carver, Smith began casting wildlife bronzes from clay in 1984. His time spent in the Pacific Coast wilds and the mountains of Montana instilled a love of the natural world and a talent for patient observation of wildlife in its habitat. Smith moved to Florida in 1996 and continues to spend most of his time amongst the abundant wildlife along the Treasure Coast. Smith's work can be found in museums, as public monuments and in private art collections across the world. He has created commission works for several states, counties, and cities across the USA. Most notable of these, the 19’ Stuart Sailfish, has become the iconic symbol of the City of Stuart in Florida. Smith’s experience working on both private and publicly commissioned art projects has given him a unique understanding of both the artistic sensibilities and the practical applications of monumental sculptures in public places. Smith’s sculptures can be found at select fine art galleries throughout the United States. His work has been presented to presidents, state officials and foreign dignitaries as well as acquired by public and private collectors. His work has received multiple awards, including the 2015 Merit Award from the prestigious Society of Animal Artists. Today, Geoffrey Smith continues his work at his studio located in Port Salerno, Florida. He is a prominent figure in the community through his charitable giving, participation for environmental preservation and advocacy for the arts.
