LINK: Festung Demenz 001-005 (ENG) - FESTUNG DEMENZ The term was created by combining the two ideas explained below: - "memory palace" - (also called "roman room / roman chamber"(?)) a mnemonistic technique, a way of remembering information that makes use of human spatial memory. Its origins date back to ancient Greece and Rome. This technique involves imagining the structure of a building or place. Next, the necessary information is assigned to individual objects located in the imaginary space. Subsequent recalling of memories is achieved by "going through" the image of the location and activating items related to the desired information. - "Festung Breslau" - this is the historical name of Wrocław given when the city was transformed into a gigantic defensive fortress in the last days of World War II. Traces of this period are still visible today. - About the series of paintings "Festung Demenz" - the concept of this cycle consists in creating our own "room" composed of fragments of the city of Wroclaw, where I'm living now. The main inspiration is places that are in some ways forgotten, overlooked - old tenement houses, ruined buildings reflecting old events. That is why the word "demenz" (German: dementia) was placed in the title as the opposite of the word "memory". Also, the "palace" was replaced by "festung" (fortress) as better associated with the city. Each picture is based on photographic documentation. Pictures help me to save and keep visual impressions related to places that will soon disappear and be forgotten. By placing these scenes in my paintings, I turn them into "memories". Each such fragment is an element of fortress construction. The facial study has been placed into composition to refer to a living human element. * In the first painting "Festung Demenz 001" architecture is treated conventionally and in abstract way. Next works better reflect the assumptions of the idea. * "Brasil Slums" - these words were painted on the building in my neighborhood. I am constantly looking for such inscriptions and "folk wisdom" on the walls because of their enigmatic character. * Huby71 / DOA (?) - also this word was painted with stencil on the wall of my neighborhood. Huby is a district of Wrocław and number 71 means "Wrocław" in slang. Most likely DOA is an author's nickname.
