The work was influenced by Joan Mitchell, Hartigan and de Kooning. The sense of gesture, mark marking even frenzy of strength are central to this piece. There was a sense of recognizing attempts at limitations to women in this country. This piece made me think of the American folk hero Annie Oakley and the song “Anything you can do, I can do better” from the musical Annie Get Your Gun. I wish I could remember what happened in the news the day I began and the day I completed the piece. I do not but I remember that the title was immediate and right. Some of the title and painting was a commentary of the history of art and women’s roles in it. I must pay homage in this painting to Joan Mitchell and de Kooning. I have been of late working on paper with oil stocks, luscious big pastels and graphite. In these pieces I access pure emotion and let the marks guide me. My years of training and practice allow me to suspend the conceptual analytic part of my brain to really channel the unconscious emotion of the moment. But the moment is now, with the pandemic. With continual threat of possible contagion, I dig into the deepest parts of myself finding anger, joy, passion, fear and grace. I still am unable to use my normal large studio. So I work much smaller with an intensity due to the uncertainty of these times. Yet my love of color, movement, and mark move these new pieces forward, and my essential hope for both those I love and humanity emerges. I hope that the viewer finds excitement and beauty in these pieces, a sense of life which triumphs difficulty and despair. I am using oil sticks because of their immediacy. I use no brushes, simply my hand and fingers on the paper in the moment.
