Figure study For The Battle of Cascina (Michelangelo Studies) Painting

This work is an interpretation of a figure study drawing by Michelangelo for his never-completed artwork The Battle of Cascina. I have always been captivated by Michelangelo's figure sketches and their often incomplete nature, in which he distills the essential forms of the body and the pose with stunning simplicity of line and tone. Stripped of any extraneous context, they allow the beauty of the figure to shine in a different way to a completed, fully coloured painting. In re-presenting a nude figure I focus on the essence of the pose, often making them fragmentary glimpses of the original. I have emulated the simplicity of this sketch by using only two colours, red ochre and white, on a natural Italian earth pigment background. Painted with fine artist's quality oil paint on Fabriano canvas grain paper.
