Acrylic paste & Paint on Stretched canvas. Colour continues onto the sides of this canvas. Ready to hang. Flight is a painting with a long history in my studio! I painted it, but wasn't happy with it, so it languished with other unfinished canvases. In the initial colouring the background was fairly plain and the horse was somewhat 'floating' on the canvas and it wasn't the energy I was going for! Obviously it is difficult to 'anchor' the image when there is no ground as such, especially in an abstract piece, but it needed something so was put aside. After working on other pieces in the meantime, I realised that the horse and the background had to be more 'one' and they needed to be lively because I was trying to portray the free, fearless 'flight' of a horse in motion. I introduced more colour to the background and then brushed with white, the white highlighted the texture of the pastework to give more dimension. I love the multiple layers of colour and the raw texture on this piece of work now. All artwork is signed and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

I enjoy using texture mediums to create interesting surfaces which I then colour. Many of my paintings have textured contours which cast shadows that change as the light changes and give a different life to each piece throughout a day. I’m captivated by the different ways paint behaves depending on how it’s used, the way the strokes of a brush or palette knife leave their mark, the way the paint mixes and changes with every pass. I love to watch my paintings unfold before me, as although I may start with an idea, I let the paint itself dictate how the piece evolves. Abstractionism is perfect for allowing the colour and form of my work to express the nuances of the paint and mediums themselves, unconstrained by realistic form.
